"she flailed her arms like a bird in an eternal , grotesquely futile effort to fly. Beating the air, a winged but grounded bird , intent on the blue void it could not reach - could not even see.."
p. 204
This quote further reiterates the adversity of rejection that Pecola faces all throughout the novel. She encounters and faces denial of acceptance through every person she comes across. Her lack of beauty is continually mentioned by every other character and is always described negatively . She is lonely out of her wits ; however, the only people that deem her worthy of attention are the "ruined" women of the town. Ultimately, this may be considered as a sort of irony. For the most part, this supports the notion that no matter how hard she "flaps her wings", and attempts to overcome this hill ; everyone around her brings her down in every way possible and places her in an inevitable lonesome hole.
Why would Frieda and Claudia avoid Pecola after they failed her ? If they were clever enough to realize that nobody else cared for her why would they abandon her if they wholeheartedly wanted to help ?
