Growing Up

"I don't know what went on in Jarvis's mind when he brought me that doll. Imagine bringing me a doll! And Janice tried to explain that she had pictured me as a little girl. I had counted on Jarvis bringing me something from Alaska."

Frankie wishes she was an adult, and she wishes that everyone else would see her as one. She can't believe that anyone would assume she is a child that would want a doll. She wants her name to start with Ja like Jarvis and Janice because she associates them with being grown up. She also relates weddings with being an adult, which is why she plans to attend her brother's. She wishes she could join the war, a definitively "adult" thing to do, and since she can't she wishes she could donate blood to go to the soldiers, but she's too young. She wants to be a part of something big, and to be known for it. She also tries to be more grown up by getting in trouble and doing things with guns and knives. When she is walking around town, she tries to seem older and wiser, and tries to show off for people, by telling them she's going to a wedding, and other times by pretending to work in her father's store.
Being seen as older is very important to Frankie, and she is ready to go out of her way to prove that she is, by leaving her hometown and hoping to travel to many places.

Q: Would Frankie feel less of a need to act and be seen as grown up if she had a group of friends her age?
